Joomla 3.x road map has been approved, and much work is already well underway. Under the new Joomla Release Cycle Joomla 3.0 will be available in approximately 18 months though upgrading is optional until December 2013 when Joomla 2.5 reaches End of Life.
Joomla 3.x will bring a new way to envision content based on a Unified Content Model (UCM) where every piece of content shares the same base and attributes and is then extended with custom fields. This re-envisioning of content will enhance the way Joomla works, provide better SEO, and add social features to content.
A whole new user experience (UX) is being worked on for Joomla 3.x creating a whole new way to administer the entire CMS. Designers are already submitting their concepts and deep discussions are taking place. At the heart are talks of providing a universal UI library to give all developers a method for creating a consistent universal interface.
Much more is planned for Joomla 3.x so stay tuned and migrate now to Joomla 2.5 as going from 2.5 to 3.x will be much easier in the long run. Some of the 3.x features may be released as part of the 2.x release series as features become available.
